YouTube introduces notes to add context information to your video

Jakarta (MidLand) – YouTube is introducing a new experimental notes feature that allows users to add notes to provide more context and information beneath videos.

TechCrunch, Monday (6/17), reported that Notes’ crowdsourcing feature has a similar concept to Community Notes on X (formerly Twitter).

YouTube notes can be used to explain things and add context to the video. When a song is intended as a parody or when old footage is portrayed as a current event, users can add that information via Notes.

The launch of Notes occurs at the same time as the political year in the United States. While misinformation was a significant problem during the 2020 US presidential election, it is expected to become an even bigger problem in 2024 thanks to the growth of generative artificial intelligence (AI).

With the new Notes feature, YouTube is trying to minimize the spread of misinformation on its platform. For starters, the trial will be available on mobile devices in the United States in English.

YouTube has acknowledged that errors may occur during testing and expects that there may be notes that do not fit the videos or that incorrect information may be included in the notes.

The company intends to learn from that testing phase and also welcomes feedback from viewers and creators on the quality of the notes.

As part of the test, a limited number of users will be invited to write notes. Eligible users have an active YouTube channel in good standing.

Viewers in the United States will begin to see video notes in the coming weeks and months. During initial testing, third-party reviewers will evaluate the usability and accuracy of the notes.

YouTube will use these responses to train its system.

If third-party reviewers find the notes useful, they will appear below the video. Viewers will then be asked to rate whether they found the notes “helpful,” “somewhat helpful,” or “not helpful.”

They will also be asked to explain why they thought the notes were useful or not. For example, someone might say they found the note useful because it listed high-quality sources or because it was written in a neutral manner.

YouTube will use an algorithm to determine which records to publish based on ratings received.

The algorithm will identify notes that are useful to a broader audience. For example, if a large number of people who previously gave different ratings now rate a particular note as helpful, YouTube will be more likely to show that note below the video.

The company says the system will continue to improve as more records across different types of videos are submitted and evaluated on the platform. Along with the improvements, YouTube will also determine whether the Notes feature deserves to be officially launched.
