Women benefit more from exercise
Jakarta (MidLand) – Regular exercise is beneficial for mental and physical well-being. Recent studies suggest that women may gain greater health benefits than men from the same amount of exercise.
Cited in Medical Daily on Wednesday, research has shown that women exercise much less than men. However, recent research findings suggest that women may need less exercise to get the same benefits as men.
According to a study published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, regular exercise significantly reduces the risk of premature death or fatal cardiovascular events more for women than for men, and women get more benefits even with less effort.
“Our study does not suggest that women should exercise less, but rather encourages women who may not exercise enough for various reasons, that even relatively small amounts of exercise can provide significant benefits,” said the co-author of the study. study, Dr. Hongwei.

The study examined the physical activity of more than 400,000 U.S. adults ages 27 to 61 through surveys conducted by the National Center for Health Statistics between 1997 and 2019.
The researchers also collected data on all-cause mortality and cardiovascular mortality from National Death Index records two years after the survey.
Approximately 40,000 participants died during the study period, including 11,670 deaths due to cardiovascular disease.
The study revealed that women who exercised at least 150 minutes a week had a 24% lower risk of death from all causes than those with lower activity levels.
Men who achieved the same recommended level of physical activity had a 15% lower risk of death than those who did not reach that threshold.

Exercise reduces the risk of death from heart attack, stroke or other cardiovascular events by 36% in women, while men experience a 14% risk reduction.
“We hope this study helps everyone, especially women, understand that they stand to benefit greatly from exercise. It’s a powerful way to live healthier, longer lives. Women on average tend to exercise less than men. men and these findings are expected to inspire more women to add additional movement to their lives,” said senior author Dr. Susan Cheng.
The researchers noted that women had a lower risk of death than men across all levels of physical activity, from light to vigorous exercise.
However, the reduction in risk of death through moderate aerobic physical activity was distributed equally for both sexes at 300 minutes (or five hours) per week, with a reduction of 24% for women and 18% for men . Doing 110 minutes of vigorous aerobic exercise per week was associated with a 24% lower risk for women and 19% for men.
Women get the same benefits as men in less time. The researchers noted that women needed just 140 minutes of moderate aerobic exercise to achieve an 18% risk reduction compared to 300 minutes for men, and 57 minutes of vigorous aerobic exercise to achieve a 19% risk reduction compared to to 110 minutes for men.
“Even limited amounts of regular exercise can provide huge benefits, and this is especially true for women. Taking some time regularly to exercise, even if just 20-30 minutes of vigorous exercise a few times a week, can provide more benefits than I am aware of,” Cheng said.
