MidLand, Jakarta – The Scholastic Potential Test or TPS is a test in the computer-based writing exam or UTBK in the National Selection for Exams (SNBT). This test is designed to test the thinking skills of test takers or prospective students. The skills tested in the TPS are the ability to understand and reason.
According to an upload from the Educational Testing Management Center’s Instagram account, there are at least four components of a candidate student which is tested in UTBK-SNBT. What are these components?
1. General reasoning ability
The test on this component aims to determine a person’s ability in new problem solving procedures. This component is further divided into three subcomponents. First, inductive knowledge which is the ability to observe facts or events to discover their underlying principles.
Second, deductive knowledge, which is the ability to reason logically using previously known premises and principles. Third, quantitative knowledge, i.e. the ability to involve quantities and simple mathematical relationships, as well as the use of basic arithmetic operators.
2. General knowledge and understanding
This component of the test tests prospective students’ ability to understand and communicate knowledge considered important in the Indonesian cultural environment. Especially in language skills, word usage, as well as breadth and depth of general knowledge. Not only that, this component of the test also tests prospective students’ practical knowledge of language, information, and special verbal and linguistic concepts.

3. Reading and writing skills
This third component tests prospective students’ basic skills in reading, reading fluency, and writing skills needed to understand written language and express thoughts through writing. Aspects of skills tested in this component include basic skills and more complex skills, such as written discourse and story writing.
4. Quantitative knowledge
Through this component, future students’ knowledge of mathematics will be tested. Quantitative knowledge represents the ability to use quantitative information and manipulate numerical symbols. Apart from that, this ability also includes knowledge of mathematical calculations, solving mathematical problems and general knowledge of mathematics.
