TIME.CO, Jakarta – Ministry of Environment and Forestry (KLHK) reports on technology activities weather modification efforts to control forest and land or karhutla fires have yielded results in cloud seeding areas in Riau.
Forest and Land Fire Control Director Thomas Nifinluri in a statement in Jakarta on Sunday, Aug. 20, 2023, said that rain has been observed in the cloud seeding area and continues to occur.
“In addition to the increase in precipitation, the peat groundwater level at several observation stations also shows a trend that continues to rise significantly with an average increase of 15 centimeters. These conditions may be indicators of the success of the TMC at Riau so far,” he said.
Thomas said the intensity of the rain continued to occur in forest and land fire prone areas in Riau during the period August 10-18, 2023.
According to him, the importance of the results of climate modification technology operations can be monitored by the decrease of hotspots in Riau.
“Over the past week, there have been no confirmed hot spots above the 80 percent confidence level,” Thomas said.
Until August 21, 2023, the government is organizing a climate modification technology operation with the aim of seeding clouds in vulnerable areas of Riau.
The Ministry of Environment and Forestry and the parties continue to work to optimize the growth potential of cloud in the region.

There were 14 sorties of cloud seeding flights
As many as 14 sorties of cloud seeding flights have consumed up to 11,200 kilograms of seed material through August 18, 2023. Rain always occurs in the cloud seeding area with accumulated intensities ranging between 80-150 millimeters over nine days .
“We hope that all stakeholders can continue to work together in this activity, so that the safety and main objective of the climate modification technology mission to prevent forest and land fires can be achieved,” said Thomas.
“It is very important to anticipate the occurrence of forest and land fires so as not to jeopardize the health, transport and economy of the Riau population. In addition, it is important for us to control forest and land fires, considering that there are still events which are inseparable activities from the series of summits during the period of Indonesia’s presidency in ASEAN 2023,” he said.
