Vulnerable to fraud, Facebook threatened with blocking in Thailand: Okezone techno
BANGKOK – Facebook risks being blocked in the Land of the White Elephant, Thailand. A minister in the country’s government said that Meta’s social media platform has recently not been effective enough in filtering advertisements and is prone to fraud.
As reported by The Washington TimesOn Wednesday (8/23/2023), Thailand’s Minister of Economy and Digital Society, Chaiwut Thanakamanusorn threatened to try to shut down Facebook in his country.
He admitted he would file a case in criminal court. According to him, Facebook has made Thais vulnerable to fraud resulting in huge losses.
He said Thai authorities asked Facebook’s parent company Meta to remove the fake ads, leading to more than 5,000 ads being blocked, but there was no follow-up from the company.
Chaiwut said the fake Facebook ads or profiles often claim to be reputable financial and investment advisors offering high returns, luring people into scams that have resulted in them losing money.
It is not yet clear how quickly a court would rule on the case if brought by the ministry. What is clear is that Facebook is one of Thailand’s best-selling social media outlets, with 50 million user accounts out of a total population of 66 million.
