US Senator Supports ICC Arrest Warrant for Israeli Leader

Washington (MidLand) – Independent US Senator Bernie Sanders has expressed his support for International Criminal Court (ICC) Chief Prosecutor Karim Khan’s call to issue arrest warrants for Israeli leaders.

Sanders urged the United States to respect international law.

“In my opinion, the International Criminal Court seeks to respect international law and minimum standards of good conduct. Our government must do the same,” Sanders said Tuesday evening (5/21) in front of the US Senate.

The statement came after Khan on Monday (20/5) filed arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, as well as three leaders of the Palestinian group Hamas for “war crimes and crimes against “humanity” committed in Gaza. Strip.

Sanders said that when the International Criminal Court declared Russian President Vladimir Putin a war criminal last year, the U.S. government welcomed the decision.

“Some say it is unfair to compare Israel’s democratically elected head of government to Putin, who runs an authoritarian system. “Yes, democratically elected officials can (still) commit war crimes,” he said.

“The International Criminal Court is doing its job. They’re doing what they’re supposed to do. We can’t just apply international law if it’s beneficial (to us),” Sanders added.

He reminded fellow senators that more than 35,000 Palestinians have been killed and nearly 80,000 others injured since the war between Israel and Hamas began on October 7 last year.

Although he believes Israel has the right to attack Hamas, Sanders stressed that Netanyahu and his government have no right to launch a brutal war against women and children, or against innocent Gazans.

“And for that there has to be consequences,” Sanders said.

“What the International Criminal Court does matters to the global community, which means we cannot allow humanity to descend into barbarism,” he added.
