Unpad will digitize rare archives of Sundanese culture and history
MidLand, Bandung -Padjadjaran University (Unpack) plans to digitize archives containing Sundanese heritage as a form of contribution to cultural and historical preservation Sunday. The Unpad Center for the Digitization and Development of Sundanese Culture (PDPBS) noted that there are approximately 100 Sundanese-language mass media discussing Sundanese culture and history that have been published since the colonial era of the Dutch East Indies.
However, the lack of storage has made these media on the verge of extinction. PDPBS Unpad president Ganjar Kurnia said that in addition to mass media, there are tens of thousands of books, sound recordings, images and important documents about the Sundanese that have been scattered or even destroyed by time.
“This is (one of) Sundanese wealth that nowadays begins to continue to decline,” Ganjar said in his statement, Wednesday, January 17, 2024.
Ganjar said strong efforts are needed so that archives of Sundanese history, culture and arts can be maintained. One way is digitalization.
According to Ganjar, one of the progress of a civilization is marked by the preservation of archival evidence of the cultural heritage of the past. These cultural protection efforts comply with Law (UU) Number 5 of 2017 regarding the Promotion of Culture.
The activities carried out by PDPBS aim to protect archives formatted and stored in a digital database. “There are more than 1 million pages that have been digitized by PDPBS, but there are (believed to be) many other materials,” Ganjar said.

Not only that, according to Ganjar, PDPBS Unpad conducts research and provides Sundanese coaching and teaching materials in digital format. After being collected and digitized, the archives are returned to the community for use in learning and research.
In addition to this, in order to create awareness and facilitate public access to the study of Sundanese cultural literature, PDPBS Unpad has developed the Sundadigi application which is available in the form of a website or application on the Android platform.
This application is part of efforts to save and document Sundanese culture in digital format and facilitate its access to the public. Since its launch in September 2023, the Sundadigi application has been visited by 32 thousand visitors and installed via PlayStore by 5 thousand users.
