UI Professor Innovation, the safest and most practical baby breathing tool
TIME.CO, Jakarta – Professor of Pediatrics, Faculty of Medicine, University of Indonesia (FKUI) Teacher dr. dr. Rinawati Rohsiswatmo, Sp.A (K) and his team have innovated a respirator for infants called the Mix Safe Transport Infant Blending Resuscitator.
“With the presence of this practical and safe respirator, it is hoped that it can reduce infant mortality due to asphyxia or the inability to breathe spontaneously at birth,” said Rinawati Rohsiswatmo on Wednesday, Aug. 16, 2023.
Currently, the infant mortality rate in Indonesia is the fifth highest in Southeast Asia. Prematurity, i.e. the birth of a baby before reaching 37 weeks of gestation and asphyxia, i.e. the inability to breathe spontaneously at birth, are the main causes of infant death.
Asphyxia contributes up to 22% of the total neonatal mortality rate in Indonesia. However, according to Rinawati, this condition can actually be prevented.
To deal with this problem it is necessary to have a respirator capable of mixing oxygen with medical gas (medical air) in the right proportion, so that it not only saves the baby, but is also safe for the retina of premature babies and helps prevent the risk of blindness.
“Unfortunately, such tools are hard to find in the market and have very high prices,” he said.
Since 2013, the inspiration to create a respirator that can be used both in and outside the hospital has moved me.
Together with a team of experts from the University of Indonesia (UI), Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) and Gadjah Mada University (UGM), we collaborated with industry partner PT. Fyrom International to produce this innovative product.
The development process took nearly two years, including testing and training, so the tool is now usable as intended.
The Mix Safe Transport Infant Blending Resuscitator has the advantage of being a portable respirator, suitable for use in birthing areas, easy to transport and safe when used to help breathe babies who need to be referred to hospital.
The tool is designed with the use of a battery that can last up to six hours of use.
He further said that this tool doubles as a compressor, allowing it to be used to adjust the proportion of oxygen delivery in the range of 21-30 percent when mixed with pure oxygen.
Announcement
prof. dr. dr. Rinawati Rohsiswatmo, Sp.A (K) thanks to his innovation in 2021 won the ASN Inspirational Award from the Indonesian Ministry for State Empowerment and Bureaucratic Reform.
This innovation has given new hope to the care of premature babies in Indonesia. The breathing apparatus has been used in nearly all corners of the country and is an important tool for primary level healthcare facilities.

“The professor. Rinawati who identified a new solution to meet the needs of patients and received response from industrial partners who have created an innovative Mix Safe Transport Infant Blending Resuscitator respirator for infants, a true example of successful collaboration between academia and industry.
PT Fyrom International Group Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Machdian Muharam hopes the creation of this respirator will motivate researchers to FKUIto implement other innovative ideas, and become a partner of the industrial sector.
It is hoped that it will continuously create the best all-round products, the result of the hard work of the nation’s children, and become the main product as the main product in the country.
