To avoid bothering you, WhatsApp adds a new voice chat mode with large groups

MidLand, JakartaApplication Message Whatsapp in the coming weeks it will launch a new voice chat feature designed to make voice calls less intrusive in large groups.

This feature was previously released in beta, but WhatsApp has now made it official, as reported by The Verge, on November 13, 2023.

While voice calls on WhatsApp have long been possible with up to 32 participants, this new voice chat feature works a little differently. Group participants will not be automatically reactivated when starting voice chat; instead, they will receive push notifications and there will be a speech bubble in the chat that they can tap to participate.

Once a voice chat is started, call controls will be accessible from the top of the chat without hindering participants’ ability to send messages at the same time. Like other private WhatsApp messages, voice chats are end-to-end encrypted and can be attended by up to 32 participants.

Announcement

Voice chat will launch on iOS and Android in the coming weeks. The rollout will start with larger group chats with between 33 and 128 participants, according to WhatsApp’s page on the feature, so not everyone in a given group will be able to participate in a voice chat at the same time.

It is suspected that groups with fewer than 33 users were not given priority because they can use WhatsApp’s existing group voice calling feature.
