The World Bank recommends Indonesia strengthen its green trade policy

Carbon intensity in Indonesian trade has been managed well since 2005

Jakarta (MidLand) – The World Bank recommends Indonesia strengthen trade policies that lead to green transformation.

Satu Kahkonen, director of the World Bank Indonesia and Timor-Leste, said Indonesia has shown good progress in using trade for green transformation, but needs to strengthen itself to overcome several challenges that are hindering this transformation.

“Carbon intensity in Indonesian trade has been managed well since 2005. However, Indonesia in terms of competitiveness and exports of green goods and technology has not been able to meet demand. “This requires further action,” Kahkonen said Thursday at the Strategic Issues Forum on Trading Towards Sustainability in Jakarta.

He said there are three things Indonesia needs to pay attention to. First, growing global and domestic demand for green goods and technologies offers significant opportunities for Indonesia.

According to him, Indonesia has significant potential to diversify green products with greater complexity than other Southeast Asian countries, so that Indonesia can exploit this potential to provide benefits economically and overcome the problem of climate change.

Second, the private sector is key to implementing green product diversification. Therefore, the government must create policies that can facilitate private players with high-quality technology at low costs.

Apart from this, he also advised the government to simplify policies to help the private sector increase the scale of their activities.

The final point is the need to align trade policies in Indonesia with green development. Kahkonen stressed that the Indonesian government needs to think about more green-friendly policies.

“This is our opportunity to reform trade policy. “The reforms I intend can support Indonesia’s long-term goals,” she said.
