The Press Council relies on the Task Force to address cases of violence against journalists
Jakarta (MidLand) – Legal experts at the Hendrayana Press Council rely on the Task Force on Violence against Journalists to handle complaints of violence against journalists both physically and in the digital space.
“In response to cases of violence against journalists, the Press Council formed a task force on violence against journalists. So the cases covered are not only physical violence, but we also have findings of the task force on violence in the digital space,” Hendrayana said in a hybrid discussion from Jakarta on Thursday.
With the presence of the Task Force on Violence against Journalists, it is hoped that the Press Council can encourage progress in the legal proceedings undertaken by victims after experiencing violence while carrying out their professional work as press officers.

Furthermore, Hendrayana gave an example of the assistance of the Task Force created by the Press Council that was provided in several major cases involving the press, such as the case of hacking of personal social media accounts of journalists working on Narasi. TV.
Then there was also the monitoring of the hacking case of the media website Konde.co, which was considered violence against journalists in the digital space.
More recently, Press Council Task Force assistance was also provided to an NTT journalist whose house was burned down by an unknown attacker after covering a gambling case. on line.
According to Hendrayana, the above cases demonstrate that there are still actors who threaten the safety of journalists, so great effort is needed to protect journalists in carrying out their work.

“So this (the Press Council task force) is a form of joint effort, because it is true, as stated by LBH Press and AJI, after a report is made, the resolution of these cases often stalls before the police or not not reach the court,” he said.
In addition to providing assistance through the Task Force on Violence against Journalists, the Press Council also regularly provides training to media companies from a preventative perspective.
Media companies are asked to provide standard operating procedures (SOPs) that should be able to maintain the safety of journalists while on duty.

Some of the standard procedures encouraged include the management of cases of sexual violence suffered by journalists, guidelines for journalists working in conflict areas and the management of cases of physical violence suffered by journalists in the working environment.
“We have also created several sample SOPs that can be used for reference by media companies,” Hendrayana said.
It is hoped that these measures will further ensure the personal safety of journalists in carrying out their duties of reporting the truth.
