The Ministry of Education and Culture will close the National Museum for next year
TIME.CO, Jakarta – Ministry of Education, Culture, Research and Technology o Ministry of Education and Culture said the National Museum of Indonesia or Elephant Museum plans to close next year after the September 16 fire.
“We will close the museum temporarily, maybe even for a year, we will carry out the repairs properly until everything is in order, then we will open it,” explained the secretary of the general directorate of culture of the Ministry of Education and Culture, Fitra Arda, during a public discussion at Toeti Heraty Museum, Menteng, Central Jakarta, Monday, September 25, 2023.
After the museum said it will temporarily close the museum until a later date, Fitra estimated that the entire process, from the renovation of the building to the restoration of the museum collection, will be carried out over the next year.
However, Fitra said various MNI services can still be used, virtually or using other museum units. “But that doesn’t reduce the services, the services can still be used,” she said.
So far, Fitra said the Ministry of Education and Culture is working with police and experts to monitor the impact of the fire.

The MNI fire, located in Jalan Medan Merdeka Barat, Gambir, in Central Jakarta, is believed to have originated from an electrical short circuit that occurred in the museum’s renovation project building.
Earlier, Fire and Rescue Service (Kasudin Gulkarmat) chief Asril Rizal said that an electrical short circuit was the trigger for the National Museum fire, particularly in the Block A building, which is the exhibition space of the museum collection.
The fire is known to have occurred behind Building A National Museum therefore the fire did not start from inside the building, but the impact meant that several rooms at the back of building A were affected by the raging fire.
