The Jakarta Asemka Wholesale Center appears empty of visitors ahead of Christmas 2023
Because now it’s the holidays, perhaps, and people are already going home, on vacation out of town
Jakarta (MidLand) –
On Saturday, West Jakarta’s Asemka wholesale center appeared empty of visitors in the two days before Christmas 2023 celebrations.
A women’s accessories trader named Medi admitted that he had felt a lack of shoppers since August 2023. According to him, this was because shoppers preferred to shop online.
“Shopping at the market here requires (transportation) costs. on line “(Online) doesn’t cost any more,” Medi said when we met at Asemka Wholesale Center, West Jakarta, on Saturday.
He admitted that he currently only receives a turnover of IDR 1.5 million per day on average, down from the previous year which reached IDR 10 million.
“Last year, thank God, (it was busy), now (the turnover) has decreased by almost 80%, many shops have also closed. If you want to get 100 thousand rupees, 200 thousand rupees, now it’s really difficult, don’t there are visitors, right,” he said.
Another women’s accessories trader named Arman said visitors to the Asemka market were calm because many Jakarta residents were returning home during the Christmas 2023 and New Year 2024 holidays.
“Because now it’s the holidays, maybe people are going home, going out of town on vacation,” Arman said.
According to MidLand monitoring at the Asemka wholesale center at 13.00 WIB, the basement floor, dominated by traders of women’s accessories and cosmetics, appeared deserted.
Only a few visitors and workers were seen carrying packages containing accessories while passing through the market area.
