The great innovation of the students of Brawijaya University, research on Moringa leaves for the reduction of Alzheimer’s
TIME.CO, Jakarta – Students of the Department of Chemistry and Medical Education Brawijaya University or UB has partnered to conduct research on optimizing Moringa leaf extract as an alternative to reduce Alzheimer’s and improve cognitive function.
The research team consisted of Adi Kurnia Soesantyo (Chemistry, FMIPA), Jonathan Linggadiputra (Chemistry, FMIPA), Gustav Dasa Sitompul (Medical Education, FK) and Farahiyah Sharfina Saputri (Medical Education, FK) and were supervised by Dr Husnul Khotimah .
“Currently, Alzheimer’s drugs widely available on the market have side effects for patients who experience complications. “Apart from that, Alzheimer’s medicine is still not accessible to the entire community,” Adi Kurnia said in Malang, East Java, Sunday, Oct. 8, 2023.
According to him, Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is mainly caused by an accumulation of beta-amyloid in the nervous system of the brain. This protein molecule is produced through the proteolytic processing of transmembrane proteins and amyloid precursor protein (APP).
Innovation of Moringa Oleifera leaf extract encapsulated with gold nanoparticles (MO-AuNPs) to be tested on AD model mice.
This research was funded by the Ministry of Education and Culture and Brawijaya University through the Student Creativity Program (PKM) in the field of exact research in 2023.
Alzheimer’s disease is one of the most common types of dementia suffered by people around the world, where sufferers experience a progressive decline in cognitive function and behavior.
“In this research, we created an Alzheimer’s mouse model that was induced with beta amyloid, then we routinely reinduced it with our gold-encapsulated moringa extract drug. “Next, we performed several tests on mice, specifically cognitive behavioral studies on mice,” Adi said
The research results showed that Moringa MO-AuNP extract was more easily absorbed from the blood into the nervous system compared to extracts without nanosized encapsulation. In addition to this, the innovative drug has been shown to improve the cognitive condition of mice and also reduce beta amyloid plaques.
Announcement
In addition to having a promising effect, through predictions of drug adsorption and toxicity levels, MO-AuNPs are predicted to have conditions of low drug toxicity, but high protein uptake and central nervous system binding. .
“This drug is currently under development, there are still many evaluations and steps to be taken so that the drug is ready for use and can be used by the wider community. “We plan that the development of this drug will not stop only on a laboratory scale and in the PKM program, but will continue to be developed and optimized,” added Gustav, another researcher.
Farah, another member of the research, said that this research is currently under development and the hope is that it can become an alternative medicine that the entire community can access with minimal side effects.
“Although it is still research and under development, hopefully this drug will be further optimized and used by the Indonesian people, because it will be a good alternative medicine and will have minimal complications,” Farahiyah added.
It is hoped that this research can facilitate the treatment of Alzheimer’s patients in Indonesia and become a concrete form of UB students’ contribution to managing the Alzheimer’s disease emergency in Indonesia.
Based on reports WHO There are said to be 55 million Alzheimer’s patients, including more than 120,000 deaths, and this number is expected to continue to increase to 10 million new cases per year.
