The governor of West Sumatra believes that cooperatives should be developed to be more professional

In the development of cooperatives we cannot rely only on the guidance of the RAT (Annual Member Meeting), which is not enough, it needs to be more frequent at least once every 6 months, so that every problem can be solved and resolved.

Padang (TRA) –

West Sumatra (Sumbar) Governor Mahyeldi believes that the development of cooperatives in West Sumatra needs to be further improved so that their management becomes better and more professional.

Padang said on Sunday that so far this coaching has only been carried out once a year, during the Annual Members’ Meeting (RAT) and that it has not been carried out uniformly in each cooperative.

According to him, to overcome this problem he encouraged his staff at the West Sumatra Cooperatives and MSME Service to provide assistance more often. At least once every six months in each cooperative.

“In the development of cooperatives we cannot rely only on the guidance of the RAT (Annual Meeting of Members), this is not enough, we need to do it more frequently, at least once every 6 months, so that every problem can be solved and resolved,” He he said.

According to him, this goal in addition to improving the quality of management also aims to reduce the percentage of cooperatives that close due to problems in West Sumatra.

“We don’t want cooperatives to be dissolved every year in West Sumatra due to management errors. This is what we need to avoid,” Mahyeldi said.

Based on data from the West Sumatra MSME Cooperative Service, as of June 2023, the number of cooperatives in West Sumatra was recorded at 4,004. Of these, only 2,052 cooperatives are active and the remaining 1,952 are classified as inactive cooperatives.

Meanwhile, the head of Licensing and Cooperative Institutions, Junaidi, said that during 2023, the number of cooperatives in West Sumatra will increase by 203. However, the number of inactive cooperatives is also quite high.

He said cooperatives that are not active can be caused by various factors, such as internal conflicts or cooperative enterprises that do not work well, so they go on hiatus.

Therefore, according to him, before establishing a cooperative it is important to understand the types and forms of cooperative enterprises, as well as the rights and obligations of members and directors.

He said the West Sumatra Cooperatives and SMEs Department is ready to provide awareness and assistance to people who wish to form a cooperative so that they can understand the concept and form of business that would be created.

“Now everything is simpler. In fact, to set up a cooperative it is no longer necessary to present the Cooperative Service. You just need to go to the notary and it can be done. However, there are cases in which the members of the cooperative do not understand their rights and duties, so the cooperative ends up being inactive,” he said.

He said the West Sumatra Department of Cooperatives and SMEs remains committed to establishing communication and providing assistance to inactive cooperatives so that they can become active in their businesses again.
