Jakarta (MidLand) – The National Committee for Governance Policy (KNKG) strengthens the cooperative industry by publishing the General Guidelines for Indonesian Cooperative Governance (PUG-KOPIN).

Secretary of the Coordinating Ministry of Economy Susiwijono Moegiarso said Indonesia needs economic transformation in various sectors, especially the strengthening of SMEs and cooperatives, which are considered drivers of the people’s economy.

“This is a very good opportunity, because if we look at the different PUGs (General Governance Guidelines) that have been socialized, especially the PUGs related to cooperatives, I think it is very important for us to continue to encourage socialization and then plan some changes in the future, perhaps, even the dynamics “We must convey it together,” Susiwijono said in a speech in Jakarta on Wednesday on the topic “Cooperative governance as an ethical guide to ensure the sustainability of Indonesian cooperatives.”

In his speech, Susiwijono said that the turnover of Indonesian cooperatives in 2023 will increase by about 8.51% compared to the previous year, which was recorded at IDR 182.35 trillion.

“If we look, the volume of cooperative activities since 2016/2017 has increased quite high and most recently it was almost IDR 200 trillion. So, this is also a note for us together. “On the one hand there is a enormous potential, on the other hand better governance arrangements are needed,” he explained.

The contribution of cooperatives to gross domestic product (GDP) tends to increase every year, until in 2020 and 2021 cooperatives will contribute 6.20% to Indonesia’s GDP.

Therefore, Susiwijono continued, the great potential of cooperatives must continue to be optimized so that they can provide economic benefits and broader impacts for society.

Cooperatives will be able to play a very important role in the development of many economic sectors in the regions, for example in the agricultural, plantation and livestock sectors, so that, if managed well, they will play a greater role in the national economy. For this reason, improving the cooperative ecosystem and good governance is an urgency.

Susiwijono also revealed that PUG-KOPIN should become a cooperative governance reference for all cooperative stakeholders, as well as a guideline for all cooperatives in Indonesia to be able to implement good organizational governance practices.

In addition to this, it was also communicated that the PUG-KOPIN, the first issued by the KNKG, should be able to implement the mandate of the 1945 Constitution, so that cooperatives can play an even more important role in the national economic system.
