The BNPP pays close attention to border security in the Riau Islands
Tanjungpinang (MidLand) – The National Border Management Agency of the Republic of Indonesia is paying close attention to the security of Riau Islands Province, one of the most complex border areas in the country.
Deputy for Border Management at the National Agency for Border Management (BNPP), Robert Simbolon, said the Riau Islands or Riau Islands need a state border security system based on the concept of maritime security.
“For this reason, it is necessary to develop a defense and security policy strategy for the Riau Islands border area that is integrative using concepts maritime safety as a basis for development,” Robert said at a coordination meeting on Thursday to improve coordination and synergy in managing state borders, sea and air areas in Tanjungpinang.
Robert said that Indonesia directly borders ten countries, which are all maritime areas. Only three of these countries also have land borders.
According to him, future challenges in border management include Indonesia, which is very fragile and geographically vulnerable, as well as many unofficial routes, both entry and exit points.

“Perhaps next year the Riau Islands will be one of the places to carry out national projects in the context of mangrove rehabilitation. At the same time, in Sumatra, especially in the segment of the Strait of Malacca, one of the busiest straits in the world, triggering by increasing seawater activity in the form of waves,” Robert said.
On that occasion, the head of the Regional Border Management Agency of the Riau Islands Province, Doli Boniara, said that one of the tasks of his agency in the region is to maintain sovereignty by ensuring that the island does not change its flag .
“We in the border areas need to be given attention, direction and guidance so that border communities do not become the problem, but become the solution,” Doli said.

Doli also conveyed a special policy based on Presidential Instruction Number 1 of 2021 encouraging the acceleration of the development of new economic growth centers around state border crossings (PLBNs), with the aim of developing new economic growth centers in state border areas and increase the well-being of people in border areas of the country.
“Then the absorption of labor in state border areas, especially local communities and communities affected by Covid-19, as well as equitable development and economics in state border areas,” he said.
Doli added that the series of coordination meeting activities with BNPP were also conducted with a review of the Landmark Pillars (PTR) in Tanjung Seding, Bintan, by the BNPP Deputy Deputy for Maritime and Air Land Management , Siti Metrianda Akuan, Tuesday (27/2).
This PTR is the base point coordinate of the outermost area under the sovereignty of the Republic of Indonesia.
Then, fishermen from the Sea Tribe in Panglong Village, Berakit Village, Teluk Sebong District, Bintan Regency were also visited. During the visit it was learned that some fishermen had been captured by Malaysian maritime officials because the boat they were on had suffered an engine failure and had drifted into the neighboring country.
“This is a common concern for both the central government and the provincial government of Riau Islands, to continue to carry out awareness-raising activities on the country’s territorial boundaries,” Doli said.
