The location of the earthquake was in the northwestern coast of the southwestern Moluccas, Moluccas.
According to the head of the BMKG Earthquake and Tsunami Center, Daryono, in a released statement, the earthquake was shallow due to the thrusting activity of the Wetar. He stated that earthquakes have a shear-up or oblique-thrust motion mechanism.
