TIME.CO, Jakarta – The Agency for Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics (BMKG) announced that a tectonic earthquake with updated parameters of magnitude 5.5 occurred on Saturday 28 October 2023 at 20:04 WIT. The location of the earthquake was in the northwestern coast of the southwestern Moluccas, Moluccas.
According to the head of the BMKG Earthquake and Tsunami Center, Daryono, in a released statement, the earthquake was shallow due to the thrusting activity of the Wetar. He stated that earthquakes have a shear-up or oblique-thrust motion mechanism.
Besides that, the earthquake was located in the sea, at a distance of 5 km northwest of North Wetar, Southwest Maluku, Maluku, at a depth of 10 km.
Based on the estimated shaking map, this earthquake caused shaking in the areas of North Wetar, West Wetar and Tiakur City with an intensity scale of IV MMI. In the Wetar area the intensity scale is III – IV MMI. If during the day it is felt by many people in the house.
In the area of the city of Kalabahi with an intensity scale of III MMI. Vibrations were also felt in the areas of Atambua City, Betun City and Kefamenanu City with an intensity scale of II – III MMI.
