Surrounded by forest fire smoke, Palangka Raya reduces study time at school

TIME.CO, Jakarta – The Department of Education (Disdik) of the city of Palangka Raya, Central Kalimantan (Kalteng), postponed the school start time for students because the air in the area was saturated as soon as possible.

Palangka Raya City Education Department head Jayani in Palangka Raya said the postponement of students’ school start times was based on the results of a meeting between the Education Department and representatives of supervisors and of local school principals at the PAUD, Elementary and middle school levels.

“Based on letter number 800/1590/Disdik.Um-Peg/X1/2023 regarding the implementation of teaching and learning activities during the haze, we issued several instructions, one of which was that the entry time be postponed of 30 minutes, entry from 07:00 WIB to 07:30 WIB,” Jayani said on Wednesday, September 27, 2023.

In addition to this, there is also a reduction in teaching and learning time by 10 minutes for each lesson hour, so that it becomes 25 minutes for the elementary school level, 30 minutes for the middle school level, and for the PAUD will be adjusted accordingly.

Next, Jayani said, outdoor ceremonies, sports, group gymnastics and extracurricular activities will have to be eliminated. Sports and extracurricular activities are permitted as long as they are carried out indoors. School residents are also required to wear masks in educational units, especially when carrying out outdoor activities.

“We also encourage students to consume nutritious and balanced foods and increase their water consumption when they are at school,” he said.

To monitor air quality conditions in Palangka Raya city, he said, educational units can download the ISPUnet application released by the Ministry of Environment and Forestry (KLHK).

“When the weather conditions improve later in the day, the teaching and learning process will return to normal,” Jayani said.

Based on field observations, the haze caused by forest and land fires covering the town of Palangka Raya has spread in recent days. In fact, the smoke haze, in addition to causing acute respiratory infections in residents, also hurts the eyes when they are outside the home.

In fact, many people who carry out activities outside the home wear masks to prevent their bodies from inhaling the dust caused by the increasingly serious forest and land fires.
