STY reveals the key to rebirth after the painful defeat against Qatar
Jakarta (MidLand) – Indonesia Under-23 national team coach Shin Tae-yong revealed the key to Garuda Muda’s revival in the 2024 Under-23 Asia Cup after losing painfully with a score of 0-2 in the first match against the host team Qatar at the Jassim bin Hamad Stadium, Doha, last Monday (15/4).
At that time, Garuda Muda lost 0-2 thanks to penalty goals from Khalid Ali Sabah and Ahmed Al-Rawi with several damaging decisions from match referee Nasrullo Kabirov, including a penalty for Qatar and a red card received from Ivar Jenner.
The mentality of Garuda Muda players collapsed after that match and STY as a coach had to do a big task in the second and third match.
The South Korean coach then motivated the Garuda Muda players to immediately forget the defeat against Qatar in view of the match against Australia, won narrowly 1-0 thanks to a single goal from Komang Teguh.
“I told my children to forget about that match, the first match we played against Qatar. And then we have to move on,” STY said via PSSI’s official statement on Monday.
The South Korean coach said after the victory against Australia “we have regained our confidence”.
Marselino Ferdinan and his friends regained their confidence and this paid off well when they celebrated in the final match against Jordan with a crushing score of 4-1 at the Abdullah bin Khalifa Stadium, Doha, on Sunday (21/4).
“And then, in preparation for tonight’s game, I told my guys once again that we have to play with confidence, like the guys do on the field,” the 53-year-old coach said.
Recounting his team’s match against Qatar, STY said the controversial decisions that were detrimental to Indonesia in that match were a “comedy show”.
He said that if referee Nasrullo Kabirov had carried out his duties correctly, the result of the match would have been different.
“If I’m honest, I can clearly say that the first match was nothing more than a comedy show. And I still believe that in the future we will never be able to play football matches like this again,” he said.
“If the referee had carried out his duties with loyalty and fairness, I am sure that the result of the match would have been different,” he added.
