Spain (MidLand) – Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez on Sunday (21/7) praised US President Joe Biden’s “courageous and dignified” decision not to seek re-election.
“All my admiration and appreciation for President Joe Biden’s courageous and dignified decision,” Sanchez wrote on X.
Sanchez, who leads Spain’s left-wing governing coalition, also praised Biden for his leadership during the post-pandemic economic crisis, the “serious attacks” on Capitol Hill and his “exemplary” support for Ukraine in the face of Putin’s Russian aggression.
Sanchez concluded that Biden’s decision to resign was a great gesture by a great president who has always fought for democracy and freedom.
The Spanish official’s statement came hours after Biden announced on several social media platforms that he was withdrawing from the 2024 election against former President Donald Trump.
“I believe it is in the best interest of my party and my country for me to resign and focus fully on carrying out my duties as president for the remainder of my term,” Biden’s statement read.
Biden, 81, is facing mounting pressure to resign after his shaky debate performance in late June.
In announcing his decision to step down, he said he supported Vice President Kamala Harris to replace him as his presidential candidate.
On another occasion, Kamala Harris declared that she is ready to run for president of the United States.
“I am honored by President Biden’s endorsement and intend to seek and win the (Democratic Party) nomination,” Harris said in a statement on the social media site X, monitored Monday morning in Jakarta.
Harris also expressed gratitude for Biden’s extraordinary leadership as president of the United States and his service to the country over the decades.
“I will do everything I can to unite the Democratic Party – and unite our country – to defeat Donald Trump and his extreme designs,” he said.
