South Korea uses artificial intelligence to detect tracheal anomalies: Okezone technology

JAKARTA – Usage artificial intelligence (AI) or artificial intelligence continues to expand. Recently, South Korea began using it to detect tracheal abnormalities in humans.

As reported by Imaging technology newson Wednesday (20/9/2023) the artificial intelligence system developed by Lunit identified an inappropriate tracheal position in an 80-year-old patient.

Based on the pixel distance information in the DICOM data header, the AI automatically measured the absolute distance between the tip of the ETT and the tracheal hull (tip-to-carina distance, TCD) as 4.3 cm.

The AI also measured the distance between the tip of the ETT and the hull along the vertical axis of the radiograph (tip-to-carinal y-axis difference, TCDy) as 4.0 cm, indicating that the tip of the ETT was located 4.0 cm above the hull.

According to an expert from the radiology department of Seoul Korean National University Hospital, Eui Jin Hwang, MD, PhD, what artificial intelligence can now do is reduce disease complications in patients with tracheal diseases.

“Automatic identification by artificial intelligence of the inappropriate position of the ETT on the chest x-ray allows for early repositioning and therefore reduces complications,” he said

It is known that to enable AI to have this ability, scientists used thousands of chest x-rays from hundreds of patients. Ultimately, the AI system was able to identify the location of the trachea with more than 90% accuracy.
