Since March, 116,731 people have been evacuated due to flooding in Kazakhstan
Almaty (MidLand) – Over 116,000 people, including 40,000 children, have been evacuated from dangerous flood zones in Kazakhstan since the beginning of March, Kazakhstan’s Ministry of Emergency Situations reported on Wednesday.
Yerasyl Saipash, a senior ministry official, said in a statement that 116,731 people, including 40,066 children, have been rescued and evacuated since floods hit the country.
However, 16,070 people have returned to their homes, he said.
He also said that around 6,000 houses and more than 3,500 rural fields and houses in the Akmola, Aktobe, Kostanay, Atyrau and North Kazakhstan regions are still flooded.
“Water pools were diverted from 3,570 residential buildings and 2,225 fields. A total of 112,539 livestock were shifted to safe places,” Saipash said.
About 50,000 people, more than 5,000 pieces of equipment and 19 aircraft were involved in the rescue and flood control operations, he said.
A total of 10 regions of Kazakhstan have declared a state of emergency due to the ongoing floods.
Kazakhstan’s President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev called the disaster the largest flood in the country in 80 years.
