Semeru activity started on Monday morning from seismic eruptions to avalanches
Lumajang, East Java (MidLand) – Activity of Mount Semeru, which is located on the border of Lumajang regency with Malang, East Java, was recorded by officials from seismic eruptions to avalanches on Monday morning during the observation period between 00:00 and 06:00 WIB.
“Based on seismic observations, Mount Semeru has experienced 31 seismic eruptions with an amplitude of 19-22 mm and an earthquake duration of 82-138 seconds,” Mount Semeru observation post officer Yadi Yuliandi said in a written statement received in Lumajang.
The mountain, which has an elevation of 3,676 meters above sea level (msl), also experienced 65 seismic avalanches with an amplitude of 2-13 mm and an earthquake duration of 42-95 seconds.
“During the Semeru activity, three burst earthquakes with an amplitude of 5 mm and an earthquake duration of 57-76 seconds, as well as a distant tectonic earthquake with an amplitude of 32 mm, SP 16 seconds and an earthquake duration of 107 seconds were also recorded,” he said.
From visual observation, he continued, the highest mountain on the island of Java was clearly visible. No crater smoke was observed. The weather is sunny, the wind is light to moderate from the southwest and west.
Earlier, Centre for Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation (PVMBG) chief Hendra Gunawan said that Mount Semeru has recorded an increase in eruptions and lava avalanches that have the potential to cause hot clouds at any time during the period from June 23 to 30, 2024.
“The activity of Mount Semeru during that period showed that eruptive activity, hot clouds and lava avalanches were still ongoing, but visually they were rarely observed due to the foggy weather,” he said.
Based on the results of a comprehensive analysis and assessment through the end of June 2024, Mount Semeru’s activity level remains at Level III or Alert with recommendations appropriate to the latest hazard threats.
His party recommended the public not to conduct any activities in the southeastern sector along Besuk Kobokan up to 13 kilometers from the summit (center of the eruption).
Therefore, beyond this distance, people are advised not to carry out activities within 500 meters from the river bank (river boundary) along Besuk Kobokan, as they may be affected by the expansion of hot clouds and lava flows up to a distance of 17 km from the summit.
In addition, residents are prohibited from carrying out activities within a five kilometre radius of the crater/peak of Mount Semeru volcano, as it is subject to the danger of stone throwing (flame).
