SBY bids farewell to Jokowi, gets mandate to become special advisor to the Malaria Eradication Alliance

Jakarta (MidLand) – The 6th President of the Republic of Indonesia Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono (SBY) announced that he has been appointed as Special Advisor to the Global Alliance for the Eradication of Malaria.

SBY made the announcement after meeting President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) at the Presidential Palace complex in Jakarta on Saturday to convey the news directly.

“This morning I addressed the President about my role and mandate as a special advisor to the Global Alliance for the Eradication of Malaria,” SBY told reporters.

In its statement, SBY said it will act as an advisor in the Asia Pacific region.

“I conveyed to Pak Jokowi that this task is important and I accepted it because there is an international obligation to immediately eradicate malaria from the face of the earth,” he said.

“If it fails to deliver on this mandate, malaria cases around the world are expected to worsen, perhaps even as severe as the extraordinary COVID-19 pandemic,” SBY added.

He stressed the importance of overcoming the problem of malaria which continues to threaten, especially in Indonesia, with the most affected areas including Papua, East Nusa Tenggara, Maluku and East Kalimantan.

SBY said it reported to President Jokowi about its role because the relationship was within political ethics.

“Furthermore, I am a former president, I have an obligation to communicate this to the president who is exercising his functions,” he said.

He also expressed his commitment to reducing the number of malaria cases in Indonesia and will travel to New York to attend an important meeting on this issue that will last about a week.

SBY also plans to meet President-elect Prabowo Subianto to convey the same, regarding the agenda of the Global Malaria Eradication Alliance summit to be held in Indonesia next year.

“Since there will be a summit in Indonesia next year, obviously Pak Prabowo will be the leader as president next year and so on,” he said.

With this step, SBY demonstrates its dedication to global health and its commitment to contribute to the efforts to eradicate malaria, a disease that still represents a serious challenge in many countries.
