Samsung acquires Sonio, the French AI-based medical technology startup

Jakarta (MidLand) – Samsung Electronics Co. said its medical equipment unit, namely Samsung Medison Co. has acquired Sonio, the French medical technology (medtech) artificial intelligence (AI) startup.

Quoted by Yonhap, Wednesday (8/5), the acquisition was made as part of Samsung Medison’s efforts to expand its AI-based healthcare solutions business.

Samsung Medison has signed a share purchase agreement to acquire Sonio, which specializes in developing artificial intelligence for diagnostic reporting in the field of obstetrics and gynecology ultrasound, according to Samsung Electronics.

Through the acquisition of Sonio, Samsung Medison will have access to AI development talent in Europe and enhance its medical AI solutions with Sonio’s AI diagnostic assistant and reporting technology.

Founded in 2020, this Paris-based startup has developed an AI-based prenatal screening solution that automates ultrasound reporting.

Sonio’s flagship product, Sonio Detect, is AI-powered software designed to identify prenatal syndromes and anomalies using ultrasound and received approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in 2023.
