RSHS Bandung performs kidney transplant surgery again, after stopping in 2015
MidLand, Jakarta – Central General Hospital Dr. Hasan Sadikin or RSHS Bandung performed another operation kidney transplant. Today its first patient was discharged. “The condition of the donor and recipient after the surgery is stable and good,” Afiatin, the doctor in charge of the patient, said on Friday, January 19, 2024.
The patient who was sent home was Trihariyadi Hari Mukadi. He received a kidney donor from his wife, Ratih Setyawati. The kidney transplant process was prepared for four months until the operation was performed on January 8, 2024. “The operation on the recipient and donor pair went smoothly and the transplanted kidney started working within seconds,” she said.
After surgery, the kidney donor can undergo outpatient treatment on the fourth day. Meanwhile, her husband, who received a kidney after being discharged, was deemed to no longer require hemodialysis or dialysis. However, according to Afiatin, patients must continue treatment by visiting the RSHS kidney transplant clinic regularly for their kidney function to be good.
The operation was performed by the RSHS kidney transplant team with the support of Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital (RSCM) under the Ministry of Health’s flagship uronephrology program. The costs of kidney transplant surgery are paid by the Health Social Security Administration (BPJS).
RSHS Medical Services Manager Fiva Aprilia Kadi said the success of this operation is expected to pave the way for further successes in kidney transplant operations. The reason is because the operation is really necessary and the community feels the benefits. Trihariyadi, as a patient, for example, advised those who suffered from kidney problems like him to undergo a transplant. “Now I feel like I have a new life,” he said.
Kidney transplant operations at RSHS Bandung have only recently been carried out again after being stopped since 2015. The reason is because there have been several regulatory changes and several obstacles. Starting in 2024, RSHS will continue its routine kidney transplant program. The number of patients with end-stage renal disease in West Java currently stands at around 12 thousand people.
Announcement
According to information from RSHS Bandung, kidney transplant is the most ideal kidney replacement therapy for patients with end-stage renal disease. The condition is that the patient’s kidney function is reduced as a complication of the underlying disease, often caused by hypertension and diabetes mellitus. Another therapy for end-stage renal disease is hemodialysis, which is dialysis using the patient’s stomach lining.
The kidney transplant process begins with finding a donor willing to donate a kidney to a patient called a recipient. The donor determination process is also based on the evaluation of the advocacy team who will evaluate whether the donor really wants to donate his kidney without coercion.
Then if it was recommended by the team patronage the donor will be checked for general health and compatibility with the recipient to avoid rejection from the recipient’s body. The results will then be evaluated by the medical team to prepare for surgery. After surgery, the patient must be hospitalized in the transplant clinic for the rest of his life.
