RSCM is successful in liver transplant surgery for adult patients with comorbidities

The 89th liver transplant operation carried out by the RSCM was carried out after the recipient and donor were declared compatible

Jakarta (MidLand) – Dr. Cipto Mangunkusumo National Central General Hospital (RSCM), Jakarta, has successfully performed liver transplant operations for adult patients suffering from congenital diseases or comorbidities.

The surgery was performed on Friday (4/19) on a 54-year-old male patient with comorbidities of liver cirrhosis and liver cancer, the donor was the patient’s 55-year-old brother-in-law.

The head of the RSCM liver transplant team, Prof. Hanifah Oswari, in a statement in Jakarta on Sunday, said preparation for the procedure takes a long time, even though the RSCM has experience in performing liver transplant operations since 2010.

“There is a process to evaluate whether a donor is really in good condition and is not in a condition where he cannot decide. Then there is an advocacy team that evaluates whether this donor is worthy of being a donor and there is ‘It’s no buying and selling process there,’ he said.

The operational process, he said, involved various scientific disciplines, medical specialists and was under the supervision of Prof. Seisuke Sakamoto of the National Center for Child Health and Development (NCCHD), Japan.

He said his team ensured that the patient was in stable condition after the surgery. However, the RSCM medical team continues to monitor the evolution of the health conditions of patients and donors.

This is done as a step to ensure that patients are healthy after surgery and can live longer, not just a year, but up to five to ten years and beyond.

“We looked at the one-year success rate, how he would survive after the transplant. Right now, the success rate one-year survival rate “Liver transplants at the RSCM have reached 82%,” he said.

This percentage, Hanifah continued, is equivalent to the results of other hospitals in Asia such as Japan and Singapore, which shows that RSCM’s liver transplant service has seen extraordinary progress and is able to compete internationally.

In the future, he said, the RSCM will continue to improve its capabilities so that it can perform liver transplant operations independently, while at the same time continuing to allow regional hospitals to perform liver transplant procedures.
