RI calls for improving the quality of human resources for inclusive economic growth
Jakarta (MidLand) – Indonesia highlights the importance of improving the quality of human resources (HR), both in education and healthcare, as the basis for inclusive and equitable economic growth.
Indonesian Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati said this at a panel titled “Turning Challenge into Action: Expanding Health Coverage for All” in Washington DC, United States.
“For countries like Indonesia that have a demographic bonus for young people, like Nigeria, this is a very important investment at an early stage. “And that is why Indonesia is investing large resources in both the education and healthcare sectors,” Sri Mulyani said in a statement received in Jakarta on Saturday.
In the healthcare sector, the Minister of Finance explained that Indonesia has a law that requires the creation of access to healthcare, even if the costs are high, but the rate of return is also very high. This includes supporting poor families to obtain free healthcare facilities.
According to the Minister of Finance, Indonesia currently has 95% of the population registered with the health insurance system, which is the largest health insurance operator in Indonesia. However, the biggest challenge currently is on the demand side, which is limited by supply.
For this reason, in his opinion, supply-side reform is very important, especially in the healthcare sector. Indonesia, being a large country, faces disparities in healthcare services across its territory with local governments responsible for the healthcare sector.
“Providing good support, technical capacity, expertise, human resources, medical personnel, I think will be very important. “Currently, Indonesia is launching a comprehensive health reform, which is supported by many multilateral development banks (MDBs),” she said.

To support this, the Finance Minister said, Indonesia has passed a very important reform law for the Indonesian healthcare system. This includes a complete overhaul of medical training, management of local government hospitals, primary health services, as well as integration with the insurance system.
In this way, all these things become one important reform, which is not only curative but also preventive. “So, this is integrated from lifestyle to early diagnosis of the disease, to all the services of primary and secondary river hospitals,” she added.
Finally, the Minister of Finance also highlighted that strong ownership, good leadership and a global health vision are the keys to gaining the trust of funding sources, especially MDBs.
By combining financing from various international financial institutions such as the World Bank, the Islamic Development Bank and the ASEAN Development Bank, it is hoped that a simpler and faster procurement system can be achieved.
“This will deliver better outcomes and also support reform in a credible way. “Since the law was passed, discussions have taken place with many stakeholders, so we will support it with funding,” the Finance Minister said.
