Researchers find large flocks of octopuses in the deep sea, what are the benefits? : Okezone techno

CALIFORNIA- Researchers at the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute in the United States have discovered a large school of octopuses located around 3,200 meters below sea level.

The species lives in an area of the deep sea known as the “midnight zone”. The only sources of natural light in this area are other light-emitting animals.

In the lightless depths of the sea, the octopus’s habitat thrives on a quiet volcano. Deep-sea scientists recently traveled to Davidson Seamount, located far from the California coast, where they took high-resolution photos.

In an area of six hectares, they used robots to observe a staggering 5,718 octopuses, including 4,707 female octopuses nesting on their eggs.

Warm water appears to be flowing out of long-extinct volcanoes, which is expected to speed up the development of embryos in growing female octopuses, a process that can take years in the frigid depths of the ocean.

“In the hot hydrothermal vents swarm female octopuses, barely visible due to the shimmering, foggy boundary between the cold sea water and the hot fluid of the blowhole – like a mirage,” writes the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute report cited by MashableFriday (9/1/2023).

“The dead octopuses and their surviving embryos were quickly collected by other deep-sea species before being replaced by new ones,” he added.

This deep sea exploration mission is very important to discover what lies beneath the surface of the sea. This research also showed that there is a lot of new hope in marine life, especially for medicine.

“Systematic searches for new drugs have shown that marine invertebrates (such as octopuses) produce more antibiotic, anticancer and anti-inflammatory substances than any other group of terrestrial organisms.” concluded the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. (Salsabila Nur Azizah)
