Research and mapping of cleft lip cases, Jember University finds this
TIME.CO, Jakarta – Dean of the Faculty of Medicine Jember University Ulfa Elfiah said research and mapping results showed that there were many cases cleft lip in mountainous areas. These data were obtained based on the treatment of 200 cleft lip patients at the former Besuki residence.
“To date, 200 patients have been diagnosed with cleft lip. Based on research and mapping, there are several areas where many suffer from cleft lip in mountainous areas,” Ulfa said in a written statement, Saturday, September 30, 2023.
Ulfa said people with cleft lip and palate have many factors, both hereditary and environmental. “The main reason why studies continue is still limited to mapping the areas with the highest number of cleft lip cases around the mountains, and what we found is that pesticide use really affects pregnancy,” she said .

Meanwhile, the Department of Plastic Surgery of FK Airlangga University, Surabaya, Winarno Dodo, said that the exact cause of cleft lip disease is still unknown. “However, in addition to genetic factors, one of the causes is the deficiency of the vitamin folic acid. Preventive measures are necessary during pregnancy,” he said.
Winarni also said that the latest research shows anomalies in GENES. “This gene can be damaged if nutrition is not good. The President is currently aggressively addressing the problem of stunting. It is the gene that causes defects, so in the first half of the year mothers usually feel nausea and vomiting, which will cause a lack of these vitamins,” Dja said.
Therefore, pregnant women in the first semester should immediately consult a midwife or doctor to obtain the vitamins necessary for the development of the fetus.
