Quraish Shihab invites religious figures to invoke the message of human brotherhood
I call on religious figures to continue to use religious pulpits to convey messages of human brotherhood, including Friday preachers
Jakarta (MidLand) – The Indonesian Islamic scholar prof. Quraish Shihab called on religious figures to use religious platforms to preach messages of human brotherhood, in connection with the commemoration of the World Human Fraternity Day which falls on February 4.
“I call on religious figures to continue to use religious pulpits to convey messages of human brotherhood, including for Friday Khatibs,” Quraish Shihab said in his statement on Wednesday in Jakarta.
The United Nations (UN) has declared February 4 as the World Day of Human Fraternity. This commemoration is based on the signing of the Document on Human Fraternity for World Peace and Common Coexistence.
This document was signed by Grand Sheikh Al Azhar who is also the President of the Hukama Muslim Council (MHM), Imam Akbar Ahmed Al Tayeb, together with the leader of the Catholic Church Pope Francis in Abu Dhabi, on 4 February 2019.
According to prof. Quraish, companion of Prophet Ali Bin Abi Talib, taught that those who are not brothers in faith are brothers in humanity.

The friendship and brotherhood of Grand Sheikh Al Azhar Ahmed Al-Tayeb and Pope Francis are an example that can be witnessed today. The brotherhood between the two is not just in words, but is manifested in shared awareness and concern, giving life to the Document on Human Fraternity.
“The document signed by the two personalities is a form of good and sincere intention to invite all people who have faith in God and believe in human brotherhood to respect each other,” he said.
He explained that the bonds of unity in religion do not negate the bonds of brotherhood among human beings. Because religion and humanity coexist to create a life of peace and harmony.
“The Quran also emphasizes the importance of maintaining brotherhood, not only with fellow Muslims, but also with one’s fellow men, even if they have different beliefs,” he said.
Quraish Shihab understands that the world is currently facing a modern civilization that places too much importance on material and mechanical aspects, accompanied by greed, selfishness and contempt for humans and humanity.
However, this Tafsir expert of the Quran is optimistic that the opportunity to realize human brotherhood is wide open. Because the instinct of goodness exists in every human being.
“There are many signs pointing to the strengthening of human brotherhood, including good relations between religious figures, mutual exchange of ideas between them, with enlightening ideas for the good of humanity and world peace,” he said.
