PVMBG: The distance of the Mount Lewotobi male lava landslide increases further
Wulanggitang (MidLand) – The head of the volcano working group of the Center for Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation (PVMBG) Ahmad Basuki said that the flow distance of the lava flow of Mount Lewotobi Laki in East Flores Regency, the province of East Nusa Tenggara, increased further.
“The sliding distance of the lava flow is increasing, northeastward up to 3.7 kilometers, and this is a sign that there is still increased volcanic activity,” he said at the Mount Lewotobi observation post Laki in Wulanggitang district, east. Regency of Flores, Thursday.
Hot lava from Mount Lewotobi Laki rolled northeastward up to 3.5 kilometers from the eruption center according to PVMBG monitoring on Wednesday (17/1) from 18.00 WITA to 24.00 WITA.
According to PVMBG, Mount Lewotobi Men is also still emitting hot avalanche clouds and experiencing earthquakes.
The PVMBG noted that the volcano under alert status cast hot avalanche clouds up to two kilometers to the north and experienced 111 low-frequency earthquakes during Thursday’s observation period from 00:00 WITA to 14:30 WITA.
Aside from that, Ahmad said Lewotobi Male was recorded experiencing a harmonic tremor on scale which makes the volcano vibrate continuously.
“Tested harmonic tremor on scale “The recording was intense at 11.37 WITA and lasted about an hour,” he said.
In his press release on Wednesday (17/1), PVMBG head Hendra Gunawan said that seismic data from Mount Lewotobi Laki showed an increase in low-frequency earthquakes, which indicates that the movement of magma towards the surface is becoming more intense.
This condition is expected to increase the volume of lava in the crater area, so that the distance the lava flow flows may also increase.
Meanwhile, the appearance of harmonic tremors, according to Hendra, demonstrates that the formation of gas in the magma conduit is increasing and there are fears that this will increase the explosiveness of the eruption.
Mount Lewotobi Laki suffered another eruption on Thursday at 3.45pm WITA. The height of the eruption column was observed to be approximately 1,000 meters above the summit or 2,584 meters above sea level.
The ash column coming out of the volcano was observed to be gray to brown in color with intense intensity, facing north and northeast.
Residents around Mount Lewotobi Male and visitors or tourists are not permitted to carry out any activities in the area within a five kilometer radius of the eruption center and in the sector area six kilometers to the north and north-east.
