Prime Minister Anwar leads the delegation to the ASEAN summit in Laos

Kuala Lumpur (MidLand) – Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim led the Malaysian delegation to attend the 44th and 45th ASEAN Summit (Summit) in Vientiane, Laos, which will take place from 8 to 11 October 2024.

A written statement from the Malaysian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Wisma Putra), received in Kuala Lumpur on Tuesday, said that in addition to attending the ASEAN summit, Prime Minister Anwar will also attend the summit between ASEAN and seven dialogue partners , namely Australia, China, Japan, India, Korea, the United States and Canada.

According to Wisma Putra, the other meetings the Malaysian Prime Minister will attend are the ASEAN Tripartite Summit, the East Asia Summit and the ASEAN-United Nations (UN) Summit. Next, the Asian Zero Emission Community Leaders Meeting, a face-to-face session between ASEAN leaders and representatives of the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA), representatives of ASEAN Youth and the ASEAN Business Advisory Council (ABAC) .

According to the statement, Malaysia will also state its position on the South China Sea issue and developments in Myanmar, Palestine and the Middle East.

According to the Wisma Putra statement, Malaysia’s participation in a series of summits in Laos represents Malaysia’s strong commitment to ASEAN, as well as efforts to increase regional cooperation and integration, promote and maintain peace, stability and prosperity within and outside the Southeast Asian region.

The same opportunity will be a place to exchange views on various issues, including efforts to develop the ASEAN community and the ASEAN Community Vision 2045, regional peace and stability, regional economic integration, green economy, new renewable technologies, energy transition, food security and the process towards full membership of East Timor in ASEAN, as well as ASEAN’s relations with external partners.

At the closing ceremony of the 44th and 45th ASEAN Summits and other related summits, Laos as ASEAN Chair in 2024 will hand over the presidency to Malaysia as ASEAN Chair in 2025.
