MidLand, Jakarta – OpenAI named former Twitch boss Emmett Shear as interim CEO, while outgoing CEO Sam Altman moved to stalwart Microsoft (MSFT.O). It is a shocking event that clouds the future of startups amid the AI boom.
Citing Reuters, the appointment, finalized on Sunday evening, followed Altman’s sudden dismissal a few days earlier as CEO of maker ChatGPT, and ended speculation about his possible return.
On Monday, nearly all of OpenAI’s more than 700 employees threatened to resign in a letter calling for the resignation of the board and the reinstatement of Altman and former president Greg Brockman, according to a copy seen by Reuters and a person familiar with the matter. The document was signed by employees including OpenAI chief scientist Ilya Sutskever, the board member who fired Altman.
“I deeply regret my participation in the board’s actions. I never intended to harm OpenAI. I love everything we have built together and will do everything I can to bring the company together,” Sutskever said in a post on the social media platform X. known as Twitter, Monday.
Hours later, Altman and Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella sought to allay fears about OpenAI’s collapse. Altman wrote on

OpenAI’s new interim chief moved quickly to dismiss speculation that its board of directors had fired Altman over a dispute over the security of its powerful artificial intelligence models. Shear has vowed to open an investigation into the firings, consider new governance for OpenAI and continue its path of delivering technologies like its viral chatbot.
“I’m not crazy enough to take on this job without board support to market our great models,” Shear said.
The startup fired Altman on Friday after a “communication breakdown,” according to an internal memo seen by Reuters.

Amid reported replacement calls, OpenAI’s board has approached the CEO of rival Anthropic to replace Altman and possibly merge the two artificial intelligence startups, two people briefed on the matter told Reuters. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei refused.
The organization that regulates OpenAI is a non-profit organization. Friday’s board of directors consisted of three independent directors who have no stake in OpenAI, as well as chief scientist Sutskever.
In the letter calling for the board’s resignation, the employees also called for the appointment of two new independent directors, including former Salesforce CEO Bret Taylor and Will Hurd, a former U.S. representative.
“Your actions clearly demonstrate that you are unable to control OpenAI,” the employee said in the letter.
“Microsoft has assured us that there will be positions for all OpenAI employees at this new subsidiary if we choose to join,” they added.
