Mount Semeru has become increasingly thunderous this week
MidLand, Jakarta – The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) has recorded intense activity over the past week on Mount Semeru in Lumajang Regency, East Java. This activity is monitored in system observations Notice from the Vulcano Observatory for Aviation (VONA) MAGMA Indonesia. “The latest eruption was recorded on a seismogram with a maximum amplitude of 22 millimeters and a maximum duration of 124 seconds,” MAGMA Indonesia wrote in its report on Saturday, March 2, 2024.
The latest eruption at Mount Semeru occurred at 19:13 WIB on Friday 1 March 2024. Observer Ghufron Alwi reported that no ash cloud was observed. Two days earlier he had also discovered an eruption accompanied by clouds of volcanic ash around 01:31 WIB on Thursday 29 February 2024.
“The estimated ash eruption reached a height of 4,276 meters above sea level or 600 meters above the summit,” Ghufron wrote in his report. The government said the height of the eruption could even be higher than observed. The gust of wind at that time was said to be moving eastward accompanied by thick white or gray volcanic eruptions.
Since mid-February, the Center for Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation (PVMBG) of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources has warned of the danger of eruptive activity on Mount Semeru. Especially when there was a gust sheep which reaches 1,500 meters from the summit of Mahameru. The worst incident occurred on December 4, 2021, the eruption resulted in the deaths of at least 34 people due to exposure to hot dust.
The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources explained that this week the eruptive activity of Semeru has never stopped. Although not as large as in previous years, since February 26, 2024 the intensity of the volcanic ash puffs has been monitored every day. Eruptions can also occur several times in the same day.
Recently, the Geological Agency of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources issued an early warning on Alert III regarding the status of Mount Semeru. The warning was published on the official MAGMA Indonesia website. “Recommendation; “Do not carry out activities within a 5 kilometer radius of the crater/peak of Semeru Volcano as it is vulnerable to the danger of glowing stones,” the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources wrote in its official report on Saturday, March 2, 2024.
This report was made by Liswanto who made observations early Saturday morning between 00:00 and 06:00 WIB. The Ministry observed the occurrence of 25 seismic eruptions with an amplitude of 14-22 millimeters with an earthquake duration of 75-135 seconds. For this reason, the government recommends not carrying out any activity, especially in the south-east sector, along the Besuk Kobokan, 13 kilometers from the peak of the eruption.
The public is also advised not to carry out activities within 500 meters of the river boundary in Besuk Kobokan. This warning appears because there is a possibility of hot clouds and lava flows expanding up to a distance of 17 kilometers from the summit. The public is also asked to be alert to the potential development of hot clouds, lava avalanches and lahars along the river connected to the upstream peak of Mount Semeru. These include the Besuk Kobokan, Besuk Bang, Besuk Kembar and Besuk Sat rivers.
By way of illustration, the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources divides the alert levels into four parts. Among them, Level I means normal, Level II means alert, Level III means alert, and Level IV means alert. At Level III, the volcano experiences a clearly visible increase in activity visually. The condition is usually accompanied by the sound of an eruption, and the possibility of a large eruption occurring has the potential. The threat of danger may also increase depending on the situation.
In addition to this, the ESDM also carries out early warning classifications using the color coding of the VONA system. Among them, the green code indicates that the mountain is in normal condition; code yellow means the mountain is experiencing major eruption; code orange means the mountain erupted below 6,000 meters above sea level; and red level for eruptions above 6,000 meters above sea level. The current status of Mount Semeru is orange.
