Mount Semeru erupted twice today, the eruption column reached 500 meters

Subsequently the mountain, which has a height of 3,676 meters above sea level (asl), erupted again at 10.02 WIB with the height of the eruption column observed at approximately 500 meters above the summit (4,176 meters above sea level ).

“It was also observed that the ash column was white to gray in color with moderate intensity towards the northeast and when the report was made, the eruption was still ongoing,” he said.

The status of the highest mountain on the island of Java is still at level III or alert, so officials are appealing to the public not to carry out any activities in the south-eastern sector along the Besuk Kobokan, up to 13 kilometers from the summit ( center of the rash).

Beyond this distance, people do not carry out activities within 500 meters of the riverbank (river boundary) along the Besuk Kobokan because they may be affected by the expansion of hot clouds and lava flows up to a distance of 17 kilometers from the peak.

“So residents are not allowed to carry out activities within a 5 kilometer radius of the crater/peak of Mount Semeru because they are subject to the danger of throwing (hot) rocks,” he said.

The public is also asked to be aware of the potential for hot clouds, lava avalanches and lahars along rivers/valleys originating at the summit of Semeru Volcano, particularly along Besuk Kobokan, Besuk Bang, Besuk Kembar and Besuk Sat, as well as the potential for lahars in small rivers which is a tributary of the Besuk Kobokan.

Meanwhile, Lumajang Regency BPBD Prevention, Preparedness and Logistics Division Chief Wawan Hadi Siswoyo said there was no impact from the two Mount Semeru eruptions.

“There was no distribution of volcanic ash to residential areas and residents’ activities continued normally, even though Mount Semeru erupted,” he said.
