Mount Lewotobi Male emits volcanic ash 1,000 meters high
MidLand, Jakarta – The Center for Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation (PVMBG) reported that an eruption occurred in the form of volcanic ash expelled approximately 1,000 meters above sea level outside the crater Mount Lewotobi Male in East Flores Regency, East Nusa Tenggara.
Mount Lewotobi’s male observing officer, Anselmus Bobyson Lamanepa, said the eruption occurred at 05.57 WITA and had a maximum amplitude of 37 millimeters with a duration of 214 seconds. “The ash column was observed to be gray in color with strong intensity towards the north,” he said in a statement received in Jakarta, Wednesday, December 27, 2023.
Anselmo recommended that people living around the volcano not engage in activities or stay within two kilometers of the center of the crater. Besides that, he also urged the public not to approach the gas penetration holes around the crater to avoid the potential danger of poisonous gases.
Mount Lewotobi is a twin volcano located in the southeastern part of the island of Flores. The mountain consists of two peaks, namely Mount Lewotobi for men and Mount Lewotobi for women. Since December 17, 2023, the activity status of the active volcano, which has a height of 1,584 meters above sea level, is at level II or alert.
