Ministry of Industry: Control of illegal imports improves performance of the textile sector

We are optimistic that the growth of the textile, leather and footwear industry will be successful, will increase even more

Jakarta (MidLand) – The Ministry of Industry (Kemenperin) said that increased supervision of imported textiles and textile products (TPT), including leather and footwear, could improve the sector’s performance.

“We are optimistic that the growth of the textile, leather and footwear industry will be successful, and will increase even more if at the same time the issue of controlling illegal imports and market supervision in accordance with applicable import regulations will become more massive and supervision will be increased,” the director of the Ministry of Footwear Industry’s textile, leather and footwear industry, Adie Rochmanto Pandiangan, said in Jakarta on Monday.

According to him, his party hopes that there will be parallel and strict control over the activities of buying and selling of imported used goods (thrifty) at a national level. This is because the Ministry of Industry assumes that there are illegal imports of unregistered TPT products, considering that there is a difference in data between the total imports reported nationally and the statistical offices of other countries.

In order to maintain the performance of the textile industry, including leather and footwear, the Ministry of Industry is implementing a production equipment renewal (renovation) strategy, disbursing funds in the amount of IDR 50 billion in 2024 to carry out the renovation of machinery/equipment for the fabric finishing and fabric printing industry with a target of 59 companies.

He explained that currently the textile industry has grown positively in the first quarter of 2024, i.e. by 2.64%. During the same period, the leather, leather products and footwear industry also grew by 5.90%.

This increase in performance also increases the contribution of the processing industry to economic growth, i.e. by 19.2% on an annual basis (Year after year/aa). Meanwhile, the Industrial Confidence Index (IKI) for the textile industry in April and May 2024 increased to the expansion position for two consecutive months for the first time since the IKI was released in November 2022.
