Ministry of Education and Culture: Independent Curriculum relaunches computer science lessons
Jakarta (MidLand) – The Ministry of Education, Culture, Research and Technology (Kemendikbudristek) said that the presence of the Independent Curriculum has revived previously suppressed computer science lessons.
“What I want to mention in the Merdeka Curriculum is that we are reviving the IT subject which was abolished in 2013. “Unfortunately there was a lot of excitement in the past and now, in an era like this, we need to have subjects that feature literacy content digital,” said Anindito, head of the Agency for Educational Standards, Curriculum and Evaluation of the Ministry of Education and Culture. Aditomo in an online discussion in Jakarta on Monday.
Anindito said that while the previous curriculum studied more the basic sciences of using computers, through the Merdeka Curriculum students are taught to improve their skills in using digital devices in everyday life and to develop a way of think more logically.

This is demonstrated by the various digital literacy contents included in the new curriculum. Aiming to strengthen the knowledge of the next generation to face the era of globalization amidst rapid technological advancements and address the challenges of artificial intelligence (AI).
“We are also developing a version of the computer science subject for students disconnectedso what we teach are not skills in using digital devices, but something more mentality or the way he thinks so computational thinking. “Logical thinking and knowledge of how to distinguish between valid and invalid information, what facts and opinions look like,” she said.
In addition to having a variety of digital literacy content, Anindito said the Merdeka curriculum also has various forms of learning that are expressed through interactive games that introduce logic.

For example, regarding coding, which is expressed in the form of a fun physical game without having to use a digital device.
“Tools may vary from school to school depending on the context,” he said.
Previously, the government had eliminated Technology, Information and Communication (ICT) subjects during the implementation of the 2013 (K-13) curriculum. However, in 2019, the class was held again, although it changed its name to computer science.
Computer science subjects then began to be promoted at middle school level with a learning duration of two hours per week. Meanwhile, at the high school level, they are given the opportunity to do this for three hours a week.
