TIME.CO, JakartaMicrosoft the statuses no longer update Notebook and plans to remove the word processor from the version windows arriving. Instead, the software giant will recommend Microsoft Word, its paid word processor that’s far more feature-rich than the basic WordPad application that’s been a part of Windows since Windows 95.

“WordPad will no longer be updated and will be removed in a future version of Windows,” reads a support note published by Microsoft as quoted by The Verge, Sept. 3, 2023. “We recommend Microsoft Word for rich text documents like .doc and .rtf , as well as Windows Notepad for plain text documents such as .txt.”

The news of WordPad’s removal comes just a day after Microsoft made it clear it would be updating Notepad. Later, Notepad will have features like autosave and autorestore tabs. Microsoft updated the Windows Notepad app in 2018 for the first time in years and continues to add tabs to the Windows 11 release.

However, WordPad has not received the same attention. The word processor has been updated with the Ribbon UI of Windows 7, but after a slight redesign of Windows 8, there are no major additions.

Announcement

Microsoft will completely remove WordPad in a future version of Windows. Presumably, the version in question is Windows 12 which will arrive in 2024 with many AI-powered features.
