Luhut: More electric vehicles to reduce air pollution

Jakarta (MidLand) – Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan has affirmed the importance of increasing the number of electric vehicles as a strategic step to reduce air pollution and improve environmental quality, especially in the Jakarta area.

“Later, we will have 5,000 buses for transportation, which we will immediately start gradually introducing electric vehicles (EVs),” said Luhut, who was met after attending the 2024 Supply Chain & National Capability Summit at the Jakarta Convention Center (JCC) Senayan on Wednesday.

Luhut stressed that the use of mass transportation with electric vehicles is very important to implement, considering that the air quality index in Jakarta ranges from 170 to 200.

Therefore, the government is also pushing to accelerate the implementation of the use of battery-powered electric vehicles (KBLBB) and the use of low-sulphur fuel oil (BBM).

Luhut added that air pollution has had serious health impacts, which has led the government to spend IDR 38 trillion on medical expenses for the community.

“So there will be no more buses that use diesel, nor cars. Because this transport has a big impact on air pollution,” Luhut explained.

Previously, Luhut revealed plans to shut down the Suralaya Steam Power Plant (PLTU), in Cilegon, Banten, in order to reduce air pollution in Jakarta.

According to him, this was done as a government effort to overcome air pollution, especially in DKI Jakarta area. For this reason, his party will study the issue, especially since PLTU has been operating for more than 40 years.

He said his party will immediately hold a meeting to follow up on the PLTU closure plan so that Jakarta’s air quality index can be below 100.

Earlier, the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) had stressed that the government aims to develop 2 million electric four-wheelers and 13 million electric two-wheelers by 2030.

This target is expected to result in energy savings of 29.79 million barrels of oil equivalent (MBOE) and a reduction in exhaust emissions of 7.23 million CO2.

“This goal is part of the strategy to accelerate the electric vehicle program and its ecosystem, as well as to accelerate the energy transition to net zero emissions (NZE) by 2060,” said the special staff of the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) for accelerating the industrial development of the sector. ESDM Agus Tjahjana as quoted in a written statement in Jakarta, Thursday (23/5).

Agus said that Indonesia is serious in its efforts to develop the supply chain of the EV battery ecosystem from upstream to downstream, considering that Indonesia has a rather large nickel potential to support the development of the EV ecosystem industry.
