KRI Bung Tomo prepares for training with the Vietnamese Navy

Jakarta (MidLand) – The Republic of Indonesia warship KRI Bung Tomo-357 is carrying out a series of preparations ahead of joint exercises with the Vietnamese Navy in Vietnamese waters from August 19 to 24, 2024.

Chief of the Information Service (Kadispen) of the I Fleet Command, Navy Colonel (P) Yoni Nova Kusumawan, when contacted in Jakarta on Wednesday, explained that the preparations included gun-firing exercises and checks on the readiness of the ship and its crew by several expert-ranking officers of the I Fleet Command.

He went on to say that the KRI Bung Tomo earlier this week (8/12) tested the capabilities of a number of its weapons, namely the 76mm gun, 30mm gun, 12.7mm gun, SS2 small arms, M4 and G4 gun. fight conducting gun training in the waters east of Tanjung Datu, West Kalimantan.

“It is hoped that this exercise will increase the professionalism and preparedness of Jalasena soldiers in defending Indonesian seas from future threats,” said the head of the Indonesian Navy’s First Fleet Command Headquarters.

Not only gun-firing exercises, KRI Bung Tomo also received a visit from Chief of Staff of the Fleet Command (Kaskoarmada), I First Admiral TNI Haris Bima Bayuseto, when the ship docked at Batu Ampar Pier, Batam, Riau Islands, on Monday. Kaskoarmada I during its visit also checked the readiness of Indonesian warships before participating in the joint Codex 24B (Latma) exercise with the Vietnam Navy (VPN) next week.

Kaskoarmada I, accompanied by KRI Bung Tomo Marine Commander Lt. Col. (P) Dedi Gunawan Widyatmoko, directly inspected the condition of the ship, the ship’s main weapon system (alutsista), the bridge, fire extinguishers, the cleanliness of the ship, and the readiness of the crew.

The Codex 24B 2024 training program is expected to be implemented for 6 days from August 19 to August 24, 2024 in Vietnamese waters.

The first joint exercise will be held in 2022 in the waters of Batam and Bintan, Riau Islands. In this exercise, which uses the code Codex 22B-I, the Indonesian Navy also deployed the KRI Bung Tomo-357 to train with the Vietnamese warship HQ 012-Ly Thai To. The exercise follows the cooperation agreed by the navies of the two countries in 2021.

Indonesia and Vietnam share territorial waters in the South China Sea, where the southern part of the South China Sea is included in Indonesia’s exclusive economic zone (EEZ), currently known as the North Natuna Sea.
