KIP hopes the public will exercise their right to access information ahead of the 2024 regional elections

Karawang, West Java (MidLand) – The Central Information Commission (KIP) hopes that the public can exercise their right to access information regarding the leadership candidates who will be nominated in the 2024 regional head elections (pilkada).

KIP Commissioner Samrotunnajah Ismail said the public has the right to make information about all public policies public, including detailed information about who will make future policies.

“For example, the public needs information about the characteristics of the leadership candidates who will be nominated in the regional elections, so they can get information from these parties,” Samrotunnajah said when meeting after the event. Synergy between the Central Information Commission and Press Staff in Karawang, West Java, on Saturday.

If there is information that is not obtained in the 2024 regional elections, he said the public can exercise their right to submit disputes related to the information to the KIP.

On the same occasion, KIP Information Dispute Resolution Commissioner Chair Syawaludin MH explained that KIP has been given the authority to resolve information disputes. This authority is regulated by Law (UU) number 14 of 2008 on the transparency of public information.

One of these powers, he said, concerns information disputes relating to regional elections or regional presidents.

He gave an example: last year the KIP decided on a dispute submitted by Indonesia Corruption Watch (ICW) to the Ministry of the Interior (Kemendagri) regarding the transparency of documents supporting the considerations of the Ministry of the Interior in the appointment of regional heads ad interim.

In this dispute, KIP decided to fully accept the appellant’s request, so that the Ministry of the Interior had to provide the information requested by ICW in a transparent manner.

“Essentially the request is viewed only from the point of view of public interest. If the decision of the dispute involves education, then we will decide that,” Syawaludin said.

Previously, the Indonesian General Election Commission (KPU) officially initiated the stages of holding the 2024 simultaneous regional elections at Prambanan Temple, Sleman Regency, Yogyakarta Special Region, on Sunday (3/31).

1. 27 February -16 November 2024: notification and registration of election observers;

2. 24 April – 31 May 2024: presentation of the lists of potential voters;

3. May 5 – August 19, 2024: Fulfillment of support requirements for individual candidate pairs;

4. 31 May – 23 September 2024: updating and compilation of electoral lists;

5. 24 – 26 August 2024: announcement of registration of candidate pairs;

6. 27 – 29 August 2024: registration of candidate pairs;

7. 27 August – 21 September 2024: research candidate requirements;

8. 22 September 2024: determination of the pairs of candidates;

9. 25 September – 23 November 2024: implementation of the campaign;

10. 27 November 2024: vote;

11. November 27 – December 16, 2024, vote counting and summary of vote counting results.
