Kaspersky warns potential scammers taking advantage of iPhone 15 launch
TIME.CO, Jakarta – Apple mobile products, series iPhone15 will be launched soon. Many eyes look at this new product to see various upgrades or want to own it. However, experts Kaspersky has discovered something else, namely a series of scams that take advantage of the euphoria surrounding this technological innovation.
“This scam includes a variety of fraudulent schemes, each of which poses different risks to unsuspecting users, including potential data and financial loss,” reads the statement distributed on Monday, September 11, 2023.
The Kaspersky report states that in a common fraudulent ploy, the perpetrators lure users with the opportunity to purchase the iPhone 15 before its official launch. This scheme takes advantage of users’ desire to be the first to own the new Apple device.
A common scheme is that scammers claim to be able to provide preview iPhones and promise users the chance to get them, often at a premium price.
To secure their “exclusive” purchases, victims are required to make an advance payment or disclose their financial information. Furthermore, users are asked to provide personally identifiable details such as name, address and telephone number.
Once the payment is made, the scammers disappear, leaving the victim without the promised iPhone and losing their funds. In addition to the financial risks, these scams raise significant privacy concerns, as the stolen data could potentially be sold on the black market.
There is also another form of fraud that offers participants the chance to win a new iPhone 15, as long as they pay a fee up front. The general progression of this pattern is that users are attracted to a free iPhone 15, which perfectly completes their wait for the next launch.
To enter a giveaway, participants are asked to pay a small fee, often disguised as a “processing” or “registration” fee. After depositing commissions, participants do not receive any rewards.
“In the digital age, scammers are constantly adapting and exploiting our enthusiasm for the latest technological trends,” said Kaspersky security expert Tatyana Kulikova.
According to Tatyana, it is very important for consumers to remain vigilant, check offers and protect their personal data. “Remember, if something seems too good to be true, it often ends up being a scam,” he says.
