Journalists from 11 countries participated in Malaysia’s National Journalists’ Day
Kuching, Sarawak, (MidLand) – Journalists from 11 countries participated in the Malaysian National Journalists’ Day (Hawana) held in Kuching, Sarawak from May 25 to 27, 2024, according to Malaysian Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil.
Fahmi, after opening the Hawana exhibition in Kuching on Saturday, said that in addition to Malaysia, journalists from 11 countries were present, including six from Southeast Asia.
He said he hopes that in 2025, when Malaysia takes over the presidency of ASEAN, more journalists from Southeast Asia will be invited to participate.
Previously, according to Fahmi, the implementation of Hawana 2024 in Sarawak provided the right basis to prepare local media professionals who would further strengthen relations with colleagues across Southeast Asia, in line with Malaysia’s election as president of ASEAN.
He also said that this time Hawana was the main platform for ASEAN journalists who were present to discuss related issues and prepare the country to play an impactful role as ASEAN Chair.
Fahmi said he could draw inspiration from the formation of the Malaysia-Indonesia Allies Alliance (ISWANI), which has become a forum for both countries to exchange journalistic values.
According to him, media cooperation involving ASEAN countries must be strengthened, including through the Hawana organization.
Hawana 2024 is themed “Fundamental Ethics of Established Journalism” and Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim is expected to attend the flagship event which falls on Monday (27 May 2024).
