Israel is increasingly isolated and already resembles a pariah state

Jakarta (MidLand) – The global pressure on Israel is increasingly strong and endless.

The all-out war launched by Israel in the Gaza Strip, in response to the Hamas attack on October 7, 2023, goes far beyond the point of being called an act of self-defense, so the world is increasingly fed up with it.

The world’s disgust manifests itself in many ways, including most recently, on Friday this week, at the United Nations (UN) headquarters in New York, when the UN General Assembly passed a resolution calling on the Security Council to consider Palestine as a full member of the United Nations. .

The resolution drafted by the United Arab Emirates and sponsored by 70 countries was supported by 143 countries, including Indonesia and France, while Britain, Germany and 23 other countries abstained. The abstention of Great Britain and Germany was also a serious blow to Israel.

Israel itself, along with the United States, strongly opposes the resolution. They are part of a group of nine countries opposing the resolution, as well as Argentina, the Czech Republic, Hungary and four South Pacific countries, namely Micronesia, Nauru, Palau and Papua New Guinea.

There is no denying that Israel is increasingly isolated from the world, including its own allies in the West.

The rage-filled revenge war launched by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government has left Israel facing a diplomatic storm coming in torrents from all fronts.

Netanyahu’s military operations in the Gaza Strip, continued with the assault on Rafah, which was already crowded with 1.7 Palestinians avoiding war, angered the world even more, including countries that had always been friends with Israel.

Their anger intensified after the Israeli government, which was moving increasingly to the right, did nothing and even secretly sponsored the actions of Jewish settlers in the Israeli-occupied Palestinian areas of the West Bank.

These settlers are increasingly brutal in seizing and expelling Palestinians from their lands in the West Bank, to the point that the United States can no longer remain silent, and sanctions are being imposed on them.

Individuals, Jewish community groups, and even Army battalions composed primarily of Jewish settlers were targeted by U.S. sanctions.

Embargo and boycott

The sanctions also target Netanyahu’s political allies, including National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir, who is a leading far-right figure in Israel.

Ben Gvir is one of the leading Israeli figures who have advocated the total destruction of Hamas and the expulsion of the Palestinian population from Gaza to the Sinai in Egypt.

Meanwhile, several Western countries are taking further measures. Ireland and Spain have said they will immediately grant formal recognition to the Palestinian state, followed by Malta and Slovenia.

Meanwhile, in South America, Colombia became the second country in the region to sever diplomatic relations with Israel, after Bolivia.

This diplomatic tsunami was also followed by a wave of economic embargoes and boycotts, including calls for trade embargoes that are currently increasingly being voiced in European Union forums.

Citing a report from The Guardian, European Union leaders are studying the possibility of imposing an embargo on Israeli products from Palestinian areas annexed by Jewish settlers.

Belgian Prime Minister Alexander de Croo, who heads the Council of the European Union, is also putting pressure on members of the European Union to waive the trade embargo against Israel, on the grounds that this country violates the guarantee of rights humans in EU-Israel cooperation. agreement.

Meanwhile Turkey, which is not a member of the European Union but is linked to the NATO defense alliance and has diplomatic relations with Israel, went further by imposing a full trade embargo on Israel.

Not just trade, calls for boycotts and embargoes have also spread among Israeli athletes, academics and artists.

Calls to disinvest from ties to Israel also continue to be heard everywhere, including from students at famous campuses in the West.

They asked the universities where they studied to sever relations and ties with Israel or with individuals and institutions that have ties to Israel.

Deleted from the global community

In other words, criticism and condemnation of Israel are increasingly widespread and harsh, along with the Netanyahu government’s increasingly reckless attitude in the Gaza Strip. This Palestinian enclave has lost 30,000 lives, mostly children and women, and is threatened with humanitarian disaster and famine, as well as seeing 70% of its buildings, including hospitals, churches, mosques and campuses, razed. Palestinian campus.

We increasingly hear accusations that Israel is not just hunting down and destroying Hamas, because they are in fact destroying the Palestinian nation as a whole.

After seven World Central Kitchen aid workers, most of whom were foreigners, were killed on April 1, the word “genocide” was increasingly applied to Israel, which argued that its war in Gaza was simply a act of self-defense.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has concluded that Israel’s actions in bombing Gaza represent a death sentence for the Palestinian people who have long suffered from Israeli discrimination.

Various Israeli circles also agree with Erdogan’s point of view. They think that the Israeli government has ignored moral and political considerations when it continues to block aid from entering the Gaza Strip and continues to carry out war plans without any peace scenario.

The Israeli government has failed to prove its case that the war in the Gaza Strip is a war against Hamas, not a war against the Palestinian people, said Nimrod Novik, a former adviser to the Israeli government under Shimon Peres, quoted by New York Times this weekend.

This worldwide pressure on Israel has encouraged the US government to no longer continue to side with Israel. Finally, President Joe Biden has threatened to suspend the delivery of sophisticated weapons to Israel if this country persists in attacking Rafah.

In fact, Israel knows for a fact that it would be very dangerous for them if the United States stayed away from Israel.

Former Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin once declared that his country’s main strategic asset was the United States, which in addition to being Israel’s main arms supplier, was also Israel’s most loyal political protector, including at the United Nations .

But now, because of Netanyahu’s persistence in obeying the far-right groups in his ruling coalition rather than the calls of his allies, the country is shunned by the world, including its Western allies.

Furthermore, as stated by Haaretz, one of the main media outlets of the Jewish state, Israel has become a pariah state, marginalized by the international community.
