Jakarta (MidLand) – Indonesia drew 1-1 against Iraq in the first round of the third place match in the 2024 Under-23 Asia Cup at Abdullah bin Khalifa Stadium, Doha, Qatar, on Thursday.
Garuda Muda took the lead through Ivar Jenner’s goal in the 19th minute, before Zaid Tahseen Hantoosh equalized in the 27th minute.
Indonesia took the initiative to attack from the beginning of the match. Jeam Kelly Sroyer took a shot which was blocked by the goalkeeper even though he was in an offside position, Marselino Ferdinan had the next chance but his shot went wide.
Iraq slowly developed the game, Nihad Mohammed Warifi registered a good opportunity when he fired a shot which was caught by goalkeeper Ernando Ari.
Pratama Arhan’s long throw-in then almost became a goal, when the last ball was hit by the shot of Nathan Tjoe-A-on who was still out of bounds by the Iraqi defence.
Garuda Muda finally managed to penetrate the Iraqi defense in the 19th minute. From a corner, Witan Sulaeman sent a cross which the Iraqi defense managed to block. However, the swept ball was within reach of Jenner who immediately fired a shot from outside the penalty area resulting in a goal against Iraq. 1-0 for Indonesia.

The inclusion of a goal made Iraq even more eager to equalize.
Ernando was the savior when he saved Ali Jasim’s shot, but Iraq equalized in the 27th minute.
Ernando failed to take the corner kick, the loose ball was headed by Nihad Mohammed, which was then met by Zaid’s header.
This goal had to go through a lengthy VAR review but was ultimately ruled a goal so the score was a 1-1 draw.
In the rest of the first half both teams tried to threaten their opponents’ goals. But, apart from Zaid’s header, Ernando still managed to catch it. Not many dangerous opportunities have arisen since then.
