iGeo 2023 completed, Indonesian students win four medals
TIME.CO, Jakarta – Indonesia has finished hosting the Olympics Geography International or International Geography Olympiad (iGeo) 2023 in Bandung City, West Java from August 8 to 14, 2023. The Geo In the 19th time, Indonesia as the host country won three silver medals and one bronze medal.
Four students representing Indonesia, namely Fiona Zhang from Petro 1 Christian High School Surabaya, Dimas Dwi Rachmat Susilo from Al-Kautsar Lampung High School, Fikri Ghifari Hanifah from Bandung Private High School and Mikhaila Rainissa Nugroho from Bogor 3 Public High School. Fiona, Dimas and Fikri won silver medals, while Mikhaila contributed a bronze medal.
During the seven days of iGeo 2023, participants took different types of exams, namely the written answer test to test knowledge of geography as a whole; Field Work Test to test analytical skills in the field; and Multimedia Test to test general knowledge about geography.
The exam was done in Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) campus and Juanda Forest Park, Bandung. In addition to the rehearsals, all the delegates went on excursions to various tourist destinations, namely the Geological Museum, Takuban Perahu and NuArt Sculpture Park.
A cultural evening show was also presented to the participants with entertainment by Saung Angklung Udjo and traditional games of Terompah, Dagongan, Chopsticks and Balap Karung which was also attended by the participants of Sasana Budaya Ganesha.
One of the silver medalists from Indonesia, Fiona, is grateful to be able to participate in iGeo 2023. “I am very grateful to have the opportunity to compete in iGeo this time, congratulations to the Indonesian team for fighting and giving the best results. We hope that in the future we can maintain our result” he said.
Another participant, Fikri said before attending iGeo 2023, continued to take part in the national stage training. “Also I pray, I worship, I stay healthy by getting enough sleep and exercise. Enthusiasm for all my friends, achieve the highest possible achievements to make the Indonesian nation name proud,” she said.

Besides Indonesia, Romania managed to become the overall champion by acquiring three gold medals and one silver medal. “Congratulations to the attendees and champions of iGeo 2023. You are change makers, future leaders who will shape our world,” said Tatang Muttaqin, the staff expert of the Minister of Talent Management, at the closing of iGeo 2023 in Bandung Sunday evening, August 13, 2023.
iGeo 2023 which was opened by the Minister of Education and Culture, Nadiem Makarim on August 8, 2023 with the theme “Creative city for an inclusive urban community”. The theme invites participants to explore the potential of geography in creating cities that are inclusive, innovative and sustainable for all its citizens.
The Olympics held in Indonesia this year were organized by the Ministry of Education and Culture in cooperation with the West Java Provincial Government and the Indonesian Geography Olympiad Team Alumni Association (IA TOGI).
iGeo 2023 was attended by 46 countries consisting of 177 students, 89 team leaders, 11 observers, 9 task forces, 21 academic and judge teams, and 57 liaison officers. Each country sends its four best students to compete in iGeo 2023.
