Hackers ask Apex Legends developers to fix vulnerabilities

Jakarta (MidLand) – Anonymous hacker Destroyer2009 has asked Apex Legends Respawn development studio to patch a vulnerability he exploited in the popular international shooter tournament Apex Legends Global Series 2024: Split 1 Pro League North America.

Destroyer2009 said the vulnerability had nothing to do with the server, never affected anything outside of the Apex Legends gameplay process, and did not hack the computers of the two players competing live.

The hack “never left the game,” Destroyer2009 said as reported by TechCrunch on Thursday.

He added that the incident was created for fun and with the goal of forcing Apex Legends developers to patch vulnerabilities that had been exploited.

Destroyer2009 declined to provide details on how it allegedly hacked two players in the middle of the game or what specific vulnerabilities it exploited.

“I don’t really want to go into details until everything has been completely fixed and everything is back to normal,” the hacker said.

The incident occurred on Sunday (3/17) California time, two e-sports players who were competing were apparently hacked and given cheat codes during a live broadcast match.

While the mid-game hack is in progress, the game’s chatbot displays a message on the screen that appears to be from the hackers, reading “Apex hacking global series, by Destroyer2009 & R4andom.”

This incident prompted the organizers to announce the postponement of the tournament on their official social media account @PlayApexEsports on Monday (3/18).

“Because the competitive integrity of the series has been compromised, we have made the decision to postpone the North American Finals at this time. “We will share more information soon,” @PlayApexEsports wrote on the X account page.

On Tuesday, Respawn, the studio that developed Apex Legends, released a statement on X, in response to the incident.
